Massage Basics

Massage is the practice of applying structured or unstructured pressure, tension, motion, or vibration — manually or with mechanical aids — to the soft tissues of the body, including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments, joints, lymphatic vessels, and organs of the gastrointestinal system to achieve a beneficial response. Massage Therapy is performed primarily by a professional Massage Therapist but is often used as a form of therapy by other Healthcare practitioners such as Chiropractors, Osteopaths and Physical Therapists.

The types of massage I offer aid the processes of injury healing, relief of psychological stress, for pain management pain, and for the improvement of circulation. Explanation of the types of massage I am qualified to offer are listed in the Profile and Credentials section below.

In my practice I want you to be comfortable, therefore I have several treatment options available that involve lying on a massage table, sitting upright in a massage chair, or lying on a pad on the floor.

Communication

Good communication is essential to effective massage. Before we begin we will discuss the type of treatment expected: intention of the massage, areas to be massaged and to be avoided in full body massage, the amount of pressure that is comfortable, preferred techniques and how they will affect your body and overall wellbeing. Your first visit will include discussion of your medical history and current physical condition.

A Body Free from Pain - Nurturework
Life takes it out of you, Nurturework puts it back. Visit nurturework.com for more info.

Massage is "structured touch" or touching with purpose.  This purpose may be directed towards relieving muscle pain and stress, increasing body awareness, or bringing equilibrium to a life in crisis.

Tangible outcomes are experienced in the active stimulation of skin, lymph and blood. Massage brings balance to nearly every system in the body. And, helps to bring a tranquilizing effect throughout the nervous system.

Massage is a healthy way to handle stress.

A Mary Jo Smiley CMTPT, CMMT, LMT at Advanced Bodywork, Massage and Yoga
www.myofascialtherapy.massagetherapy.com My original training was at the Pittsburgh School of Pain Management for Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy (1999), which is now a 650 hour course. This school teaches from the medical text "Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction The Trigger Point Manual" by Drs Travell and Simons and does not teach massage.

This training puts my understanding of MYOFASCIAL PAIN AND DYSFUNCTION far ahead of the massage therapist and Chiropractors who had "trigger point massage" included in the 500 hour massage program or took a weekend class or two. I have since gone on to attain the National Certification in Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy and the National Certification in Medical Massage.

With these and other modalities, my focus has always been pain management and correction of muscle dysfunction. Many pain complaints are due to dysfunction of muscle and soft tissue, which can be addressed using Myofascial Trigger Point Therapy, Medical Massage, Orthopedic Massage, Neuromuscular Therapy and Therapeutic Exercise. I have worked with Chiropractors and MDs to provide, in many cases, far better pain management than Pharmaceuticals can provide.

I specialize in MIGRAINES, HEADACHES and upper body problems, partially because these were my own pain complaints and partially because these are so extremely common. Pharmaceuticals such as pain meds and anti-inflammatory seldom work for long-term relief where as addressing the trigger points and other soft tissue dysfunction actually REMOVES the problem in many cases.
