Reading the Tarot From the Eyes of a Child

As a child I would sneak in my mother’s room so that I could look at her tarot cards. I didn’t exactly know what the cards were for, but I knew that the cards were absolutely beautiful to me.

I would flip through the cards until I came to my favorite card. At the time I didn’t know the name of the card, but now I know that the card was The High Priestess. I always felt that this woman had to be higher than a queen because she wasn’t like the other queens in the deck. I knew she was a woman of God because she had a cross on her chest. At the time I felt she had a crystal ball on her head so I knew she could see into the future. Her white flowing gown showed me that she was pure like a bride. The pillars behind her I felt were poles. At the time I was a big fan of Martin Luther King Jr. - these poles told me that she was for equality. I never knew what the letters on the poles meant. I had noticed that she was sitting on a slab of concrete; I felt this was because she was a tough woman and could endure a lot.

I eventually found my mother’s book of tarot and was surprised that based on just looking at the picture I had been basically right in what I saw about The High Priestess. It amazes me how open children are to the images on the tarot. I frequently ask my children what they see when they look at a card and it always amazes me how they pick up on images on the card that I may have overlooked. Now when I teach others to read tarot cards I tell them to go back to their grade school days when they couldn’t read and tell me what story the picture is telling them. When we take away all of what we have learned from the years and go back to the basics we can see a lot in one tarot card.

One day after leaving my tarot cards on the table while I got some clothes out of the dryer, I came back and my son had taken all the wands out of the deck except the court cards and was telling a story with them. Here is his story….

One day God gave a man a magical stick and told him that with this stick you can make all your dreams come true (Ace of Wands). The man knew he had the world in his hands but wasn’t sure exactly what he wanted. He one day stood on top of his castle looking out over the world trying to make a decision about what he really wanted (Two of Wands). He finally made some decisions and was waiting for his ship to come in so that he can share his decision with his friends. He even had more wands so that he can share with some of his friends. (Three of Wands) When his friends arrived they decided to have a party to celebrate the man’s good choices. During the party the man and his friends got out some sticks and started sword fighting but got carried away. He found out that the men weren’t really his friends and were really trying to hurt him. (Five of Wands) Although the man had a lot of people against him he still won the battle and the others at the party cheered him on because they were proud of him. (Six of Wands) Now that the man was King of the Mountain several people would challenge him and try to take his title away from him. But he stood his ground and kept on fighting. (Seven of Wands) Eventually everyone gave up trying to fight him. They threw their sticks at him and left. (Eight of Wands) Now that the man had all the sticks he felt he had to guard them with his life. He was scared that people would come after him and try to take away what he had worked so hard to get. (Nine of Wands) Now that the man had all the sticks and everyone had left him, he had to carry them all by himself with no help and no friends. He wondered did he really win or did he lose.
