Research Literacy for Massage Therapy Practitioners
Saturday February 21st 9am – 12.30pm
Flagstaff Campus
With Rose Adams
Research literacy for massage students and practitioners offers tools and hands on practice to embrace & incorporate the latest research findings, while educating clients, coworkers, and your community.
As more research becomes available in the massage therapy profession, it is exciting and important to make use of this knowledge. Students gain knowledge in research terminology, how to ask a research question, followed by hands on practice of doing literature searches to provide answers, and more importantly, how to integrate these finding into your practice.
Presentation of topics will include, ethics of research, evidence based practice, understanding the structure of a research article, and how to rank its levels of evidence. Ms Adams will present research which she and colleagues conducted at Flagstaff Medical Center entitled “The Effects of Massage Therapy on Pain Management in the Acute Care Setting”, and was later published, as well as an overview of other important research findings which help to advance our profession.
Rose’s early massage study was with the Pacific School of Massage and Healing Arts and is currently a teacher at the ASIS Flagstaff school. For nearly 30 years, Rose’s work with massage therapy has included private practice, collaboration with community healthcare providers, and most recently providing therapeutic massage to many people with compromised health while doing hospital based massage therapy at Flagstaff Medical Center for nine years. While working at the hospital, Ms Adams, along with her colleagues conducted research on the use of massage therapy and pain management, being published in 2010.
