Gentle Practice Yoga

Description

Gentle Practice Yoga is for the stiff and the sore, or the not so young anymore. I teach a gentle style of hatha yoga to ease stress, calm the mind, stretch and relax the body - any body. I also teach Restorative Yoga for those who want an even greater emphasis on gentle passive stretching of tense bodies, and both classes include pranayama, or breath control, for further easing of mind and body. Beginning in January 2007 I will be teaching workshops to guide and advise you through the process of designing your own home practice with your own needs and circumstances firmly in mind. Personal training sessions are available.

Profile and Credentials

I began teaching yoga to pass on what I have learned about the body's ability to gradually strengthen and heal itself. I began the serious practice of yoga at age 53. I can tell you from my own experience that a persistent gentle practice of yoga can strengthen the body, ease old injuries, and awaken a new sense of self.

Basic Teacher training - Yoga West, in Katy, Texas.

Philosophy and Comments

My primary aim is to teach you to feel the strengths and weaknesses of your own body and accept them without labeling yourself good or bad. Instead, having learned what is, you can begin to build on the strengths and strengthen the weak places.

What is Restorative Yoga?

Restorative Yoga uses props and pads to allow a person to fully relax in physically supported positions while stretching and opening the body. The emphasis is on release of muscle tension and increase of flexibility rather than on development of strength and aerobic capacity. Restorative Yoga helps to reduce the effects of chronic physical, mental and emotional stress on the body by inducing a deep relaxation, allowing the parasympathetic nervous system to work properly. Positions can be varied according to the individual's flexibility and modifications are readily made for individual differences. A typical Restorative class consists of 5 to 10 different positions, which may include backbends, forward bends, twists or gentle inversions. The positions are generally held for anything from three to twenty minutes at a time, with the median being 5 to 7 minutes. The body, feeling supported by the props and pads, will gradually release, easing the joints, lengthening shortened muscles and releasing both physical and emotional tensions.
