Inspiring Solutions Buteyko Breathing
Description
The Buteyko Method is a highly successful, self-managed program of breathing exercises that relieves the symptoms of asthma and many other conditions.
Shallow, controlled breathing and specific periods of holding the breath are used to improve the balance of CO2 within the body and to control symptoms.
When the exercises are used regularly, participants experiance noticable improvements in their breathing and a reduction in symptoms. Reliance on medication can be dramatically reduced.
Profile and Credentials
Moira N Wilson BSc MRCSLT
I was born in Scotland and have recently moved to Oshawa, Ontario with my Canadian husband and two young daughters.
I graduated from Queen Margaret College, Edinburgh, Scotland in 1987, with a BSc degree in Speech and Language Pathology and Therapeutics. I have worked in a range of settings and with a variety of clients groups, from language disordered children to care of the elderly and stroke rehabilitation. I also have developed a specific interest in voice disorders. Though my work in voice therapy, I gained extensive experience in teaching relaxation and breathing techniques.
I first heard of the Buteyko Method in 1996 and began training and working with Alexander (Sasha) Stalmatski, Chief Buteyko Practitioner, in the UK in 1997. I was one of the first practitioners in Scotland and I have successfully treated many asthma sufferers of all ages. I edited and distributed the Buteyko Supporters Network newsletter to over 1000 subscribers within the UK in 1998/99.
Since arriving in Canada, I have appeared on CHTV News and Global TV's Body and Health and have had considerable success with clients.
Philosophy and Comments
In 1952 Russian Professor Konstantin Buteyko discovered the connection between dysfunctional breathing and over 200 diseases. He found that abnoraml breathing parrtens always resulted in some manifestations of diesease and that when breathing was normalized, many of the symptoms were reversed, sometimes dramatically. Buteyko could find no person suffering from asthma, breathlessness, emphysema, hay fever, chronic fatique orhigh blood pressure, who breathed within the internationally recognized norms.
The body requires 6.5% lung CO2 for optimum health. Over-breathing causes CO2 to be lost from the lungs. Buteyko theorized that an asthma attack is the body's defense mechanism for preventing further loss of CO2.
By retraining breathing habits and reversing the tendency to over-breathe, asthma symptoms would decrease. Professor Buteyko's theory is linked to the ratio of oxygen to carbon dioxide required for efficient functioning of the respiritory system and to maintain health. This ratio is sustained by a respiratory rate of 4-6liters of air per minute.
Statements from Buteyko Workshop Participants:
"In my experience the Buteyko Therapy offers the basis of complete recovery from astham in my own case. Within 4 days of starting the breathing exercises almost for the first time in 37 years, i passed a night without and asthma attack" R.E.
"I was very skeptical of the Buteyko Method but just hoped for some relief. After one month I found that my asthma had disappeared and I no longer take any anti-asthma drugs. I still do Buteyko breathing exercises twice a day but a) I no longer need relievers or controller medication, b) I no longer snore c) I have lost 14 pounds in weight d0 My hill-walking is back to normal( somuch sothat my walking colleagues claim that I have got "new lungs" R.P.
"A great improvement and if I did the exercises every day, I am sure that my allergies would improve further. I very rarely wheeze now and if I do I can correct without medication. I have tried every doctor, homeopathic, faith healer etc. and Buteyko is the only method to cure me. Unbelievable" R.T.
