Theme: "Investigation into one single area".
In my latest paintings the representational space consists of a new single area, framed by 3 vertical and horizontal straight lines, a sort of pictorial arena in which I can investigate.
To investigate appeals to me, to discover whether my own painterly language can express itself adequately within that framed space.
It is also a sort of homage to artists like Picasso and Francis Bacon who had felt like toreadors thrown in the arena of their canvas.
The lines are placed at the beginning of my work and are removed when I decide that work is finished.
They are always present but in an non-obtrusive way : I paint on top of them, I ignore them until the end, where they are revealed and add their own significance to the work.
This almost accidental way of painting suits my present mood.
I feel in a sort of new quest : a quest for expanding my painterly boundaries. This is why I needed a fictive arena in which I can feel bound, where I can experiment in pushing and playing with those boundaries. At the same time I am only slightly aware of those lines, it makes it more interesting.
Metaphorically, these paintings also adress one of my current preoccupations : the Maya´s calendar ending on 21 December 2012 corresponding to other predictions of the shifting of the axes of our planet in the near future.
This shift is already being recognised scientifically with the constant move of the North Pole Magnet of our earth which is moving every year more and more eastwards. It used to be placed above the North Pole in Norway and is now in Siberia.
This move is resulting in a change of the tidal movement in the Atlantic Ocean, which is becoming to affect sea life and weather conditions.
Those prophecies foresee a shifting of the planet axes resulting in first, total chaos, followed by a New Order.
Metaphorically the lines in my work could represent the earth meridian lines, or the "shifting axes".
