Jan Eklund CPM, RM
Description
A home birth midwife serving southern Colorado. I will take clients anywhere within 1-1/2 hours from Colorado Springs.
Profile and Credentials
I have studied midwifery for 21 years. I apprenticed here in Colorado Springs for 5 years and have been practicing as a primary care giver for 4 years. I have attended over 200 births in some capacity (i.e., apprentice, assistant, or primary midwife), and have had 75 of my own clients.
I have done over 1100 hours of academic study in midwifery, both on my own and through a distance-learning program for home birth midwives.
I also have some knowledge of sign language and have worked with 2 deaf women. I also have some knowledge of Spanish, which I continue to study in order to work with Spanish-speaking families.
Philosophy and Comments
Home birth is safe for approximately 92%-95% of women. In the case of normal pregnancy and birth, I believe women are actually safer at home than in a hospital. In a woman's own home she is not exposed to virulent strains of dangerous germs. She is immune to the germs that she lives around all the time. Also, in her own home a woman is not exposed to interventions that can actually cause problems when none are present to begin with. When pregnancy and birth are going normally, it is best to let it continue normally. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
Safety is paramount in birth. I am not willing to risk a mother's or baby's life for the sake of a home birth. I will take a mother to the hospital if it is needed and watch carefully to detect when that might be necessary. If hospital transport is necessary, I stay with the parents until after the birth of the baby. Otherwise, I support the mother and father as they labor together and help them achieve the best and most meaningful birth possible.
Nutrition is a very important part of our discussions during prenatals. Good nutrition ensures that mother and baby are healthy and can more easily withstand the stresses of labor. Good nutrition also ensures that the baby develops to its fullest potential.
Work Hours and Fee Schedule
I usually charge $2000. That covers prenatal care, the birth, and the postpartum care. It also covers my lab fees, my assistant's fee, a pool, if the mother desires a water birth, and any other routine care. It doesn't cover extra testing requested by the parents (eg., AFP testing) or ultrasounds, or any surgical procedure, like circumcision or cesarean section.
If a client has insurance that will help pay for their care, the client pays me throughout the pregnancy. Then we file for insurance reimbursement after the baby is born. The insurance company is asked to send the reimbursement directly to the client.
There are discounts for clients who come to me who have already had some prenantal care elsewhere and bring me copies of the records. There is also a discount if the fee is paid in full before 36 weeks gestation.
