Pain is the body's message that something is wrong. I believe that inflicting trauma is unlikely to heal an injury. My goal is to relieve your pain, not cause more! Therefore, I prefer to work within your pain tolerance.
A little pain is fine, as long as you can relax and breathe easily. If you tighten up or you can't maintain deep, easy breaths, then the pressure is too much. "No pain, no gain" is a big lie told by sadists to their innocent victims. If your body hurts too much, the therapist needs to decrease the amount of pressure, work more slowly, or both.
I tend to work as deeply as seems appropriate at the time. Appropriate pressure varies from client to client and even from one session to another. Some people thrive on deep work and enjoy a little pain, but others cannot tolerate either one, especially after a severe injury.
Even the deepest work must be performed with sensitivity, and the more precisely the pressure is applied, the less force is needed. This is helpful for both of us; you suffer less and my hands feel better. The goal of any treatment is to relieve suffering, not create it. Beware of people who hurt you "for your own good." They are likely to be inexperienced, ignorant, or incompetent.
