Who We Are?

Lisa Block-Wieser, CNM:

I am a Certified Nurse Midwife attending homebirth in Tucson Az. I offer complete homebirth services including prenatal, birth, postpartum, and newborn care, laboratory testing, and nutritional education. I also offer complete well women care, birth control (all methods), infection checks, and STD screening. I began my journey in midwifery as a Direct Entry Midwife in California in 1979 where I completed a 3 year apprenticeship and attended homebirth for over 10 years. During this time I developed my skills as an herbalist and begin making my first medicinal salves, teas, and tinctures, and had the opportunity to study homeopathy in and around birth. I then became a Licensed Midwife in New Mexico where I attended homebirth for over 6 years. At this time I started learning about the medicinal desert herbs and the traditional uses of wild-crafted desert plants. I graduated in 1994 with my RN and then in 1995 with my CNM. I was blessed to do my internship with the Native American Community at Santa Fe Indian Hospital, serving the Navajo, Zuni, Pueblo, Comanche and Yaqui Nations. What I found most surprising was no matter where a women gave birth, or how poor her health was, midwifery care still improved her experience and ultimately improved her outcome of her birth. I was able to learn new skills and broaden my scope of practice not only with birth, but my training also included primary healthcare for woman and their whole families. I offer integrative care combining traditional midwifery with a blend of holistic health and allopathic medicine to provide my clients with full scope Nurse Midwifery Care.

Phredd first started to attend births here and there with me from the request of women who enjoyed his energy work. It was our oldest daughter who first put the idea of working together in our heads. She insisted both Phredd and I attend the birth of our granddaughter. He had attended other births with me going back to when we were dating, but with her birth, he took on a purposeful roll and used not only his healing skills, but his medical training as well. Her young husband appreciated the male support and the balance it brought to the birth. Our presence together at a birth gives women all of the love and support that they deserve and adds additional support for the man while shifting the energy to not only to be about women, but embraces a sense of family. Over the years the request for both of us attending the births increased, and it was our clients who pushed us into becoming a husband and wife team, marrying full scope midwifery with healing energy work. It was truly a match made in heaven. Phredd has become invaluable to me as an assistant, and when his skills are needed he is available at the birth as part of what we offer as our birthing services. Although we both have diverse backgrounds we remain dedicated to homebirth and to the women and their families who have the right to safe, supportive, and personalized health care for not only their child's birth but also for all their ongoing healthcare needs.

Phredd:

I have been involved in energy work for over 30 years now. My first experiences were quite accidental; while giving friends back rubs (a time honored teenage mating ritual) I found that I would actually experience the injuries and traumas experienced by the people I was working on. When this first happened I was more than a little confused and disturbed by the things I saw and felt. I soon met a group of people practicing Wicca, they were impressed with my natural abilities and taught me many of the basics of the energy work I use now (after separating it from the religious aspects of Wicca) including, some basic grounding techniques, how to manipulate energy and how to draw on the energy of the universe.

Using what I've learned so far, I started healing work on people around me and people I was drawn to help. During this period I found that all experiences in our lives are stored physically in our cellular memory. Our negative experiences form stagnated pools, areas of inflammation. Our most traumatic experiences can form hard knots within our body. A branch of psychology, known as Neural Linguistics Programming attempted to deal with this using specific speech patterns to help us alter and deal with our traumatic past. Fascinated by this idea I learned all I could about it. I found it limited in the fact that it uses speech to address these traumas. As these traumas were not caused by words I found that many people were unable to be healed by words alone. I then started working with ideas to take a more direct route. By locating the places in the body where these traumas are stored and delivering highly focused energy to these areas, sometimes in conjunction with Moxibustion, I have had great success in helping victims of trauma as well as war veterans leave their pain and anxiety behind and reintegrate into a normal and productive life.

I have gone on to study the effects of Acupressure, Reiki, EFT and Shamanism. While each of these disciplines is valuable, and I have learned much from each, I have found that no one discipline can fulfill the needs of all clients. In fact often times no one discipline can fulfill the needs of a single client. In combining all that I have learned to this point about energy work and adding the use of herbal tinctures and essential oils I believe I have developed one of the most powerful and healing energy experiences available today. I have seen people walk away from narcotics. I have seen people who have had difficulty healing after surgery turned the corner and start healing almost immediately. I have seen swollen lymph nodes decrease in size. Clients have reported to me that there are problems with sciatica, fibromyalgia, arthritis and other pains have been decreased or gone away entirely.

I started working with Lisa even before we were married. She and I had both been practicing about ten years by then and Lisa was extremely busy working at a Birth Center. I spent a good part of our courtship driving her to the center and helping her cleanup. I also attended a birth early on with her, having been invited at the last minute. I ended up taking on an important role, supporting a not so comfortable father who needed encouragement in supporting his wife as well as making the transition into fatherhood. It was a real blessing to be able to show compassion to a man going through this transformation. I new at that moment that I wanted to be a part of this important work Lisa does. It seemed inevitable that Lisa and I would have a marriage of service to others and that our work would compliment each other's so seamlessly. I am honored and humbled to be a part of this amazing work. And I am always in awe of the power of birth and the families who trust in this process.

Lisa and Phredd have three grown children and six grandchildren so far. Lisa had two out of three of her own children at home and successfully breastfed them all. She has also been thrilled and honored to deliver almost all of her own grandchildren.

It is my hope to offer you a safe and comfortable place to receive your healthcare. Home Birth:

I am limiting the amount of births I will attend. Repeat clients will receive priority space over new clients. If you intend to use my homebirth services, please call me as soon as you know what you are doing to reserve your space. Availability is limited and my space fills up quickly. Consultations are free and welcomed, please call for a no obligation appointment as soon as you know you are pregnant!

Full homebirth services including prenatal care, birth care, post partum care including birth control (diaphragm fitting or birth control pills), newborn care including cranial sacral work and breastfeeding support, women’s health care/common adult health assessment and treatments for you via office visits, phone or e-mail, in house ultrasound and in house labs as needed, herbs for the birth, (Sitz Bath and After Birth Tea). Fee: $4800.00 (labs and supplies are not included, most insurance will cover labs and a billing person is available to bill for you after the birth, for insurance reimbursement to you for midwifery care. For clients without insurance, a low cost cash lab is available. For clients with insurance Lab Corp and Sonora Quest is available. All labs are drawn in house with complete informed consent and every effort is made to honor what ever test you do or do not want, while keeping costs down.

Limited OB ultrasound: For early dating of pregnancy, conformation of viability, threatened miscarriage, amniotic fluid levels, and position checks. Fee: $95.00 (homebirth clients receive ultrasound exams as needed at no additional charge).

Women’s Health Care: Infection checks and treatments, menopause and menstrual problems, birth control, breast infection, (homebirth clients receive this care at no additional fee).

HOMEBIRTH:

A midwife attended homebirth should be an experience rooted in a woman's belief that she can birth her own baby. Birth is a personal experience that incorporates the emotional, spiritual, and physical needs of the mother, baby and family. The midwife's role is to facilitate, educate, support, and nurture the woman while empowering her to make decisions that form the experience that is right for her. Midwifes are trained professionals who combine the art of midwifery with medical training to provide exceptional care. Studies have shown that Homebirth is safe with a competent licensed attendant. I attend women who are committed to maintaining an optimal state of health through nutrition, exercise, and a healthy life style. Throughout a women's pregnancy she is continuously monitored for any signs or symptoms that could lead to a higher risk pregnancy or birth. I am diligent at providing preventative care through the use of nutrition, life style changes, herbs, and referrals to other holistic or allopathic providers. Homebirth offers the freedom and intimacy to explore many mediums of comfort. The use of water during labor or Water Birth, movement, music, massage, and herbs are utilized as the woman's needs and wishes require. I now have available the “BirthRite” Birthing Stool, allowing for a supported upright labor or birthing position. NEWBORN CARE:

Newborn care until six weeks of age is included as part of your home birth services. I have over 20 years experience in cranial sacral work with infants and have had remarkable results with breastfeeding and overall health of the newborn. Breastfeeding support, newborn screening and education with infant care are also included in my services. A natural oral Vitamin K is offered as an alternative to injectable vitamin K as well as herbal solutions to common infant care.

WOMAN'S HEALTH CARE:

I use combinations of herbal therapies, medication, and nutrition, depending upon the woman's needs, beliefs, and wishes. Services include: Annual well woman exam including pap and breast exam. I try when ever possible to use holistic remedies to treat most problems that occur during a low risk pregnancy. However, if the need should arise that a medication is needed as a CNM I am able and comfortable using allopathic medicine.
