Liz Mitten Ryan
Liz Mitten Ryan and a group of very special horses, the “Edition Warm bloods” live on Gateway 2 Ranch in the Nicola Valley of British Columbia, Canada. This particular herd (presently numbering thirteen) has the luxury of living as a wild herd on 320 acres of grassland, forest, meadows and lakes. They each have their immediate family members, and together are descended from the original four mares, all half sisters from the same sire. Unlike a wild herd however, when the Edition Warm bloods return to their barn, they are afforded the benefit of a loving supportive interface with humans. Above all they are respected as important spiritual beings of immense value with much to contribute to the evolution of life.

Over the last year these horses and their owner Liz Mitten Ryan have co-written two inspirational books; manuscripts of essential information for those who love horses and gifts of the earth in general.

One with the Herd, the first book, tells their story and explains the setting of their unusual circumstance, and book two, The Truth According to Horses is a communication of their deepest understanding of life. (Both books are filled with stunning photographs and art.

Bay Star EquiCenter,

Bay Star EquiCenter, LLC is located in Shandon, Ohio. We provide on-site Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) , Equine Assisted Learning (EAL), adhering to the EAGALA model and offer Personal Growth Workshops.

The EAGALA Connection

Founded in July 1999, the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (EAGALA) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization developed to address and oversee the need for resources, education and professionalism in Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) and Equine Assisted Learning (EAL). The EAGALA Models of EAP and EAL have been in use for over ten years. The Bay Star EquiCenter staff is EAGALA trained and certified and adhere to the ethics and high standards therein.

What is Equine Assisted Learning or EAL?

EAL involves experiential, non-verbal activities done with horses. This is not horseback riding and no horse experience is required. An Equine Professional facilitates the session. The type and manner in which the activities are completed result in metaphors for reflection, contemplation and discussion. Sessions are intense and effective often resulting in breakthroughs much more rapidly then other learning situations.

.

What is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy or EAP?

EAP is the clinical mental health version of EAL. EAP involves a support team consisting of a Mental Health Professional, an Equine Specialist and horses working with the client. The Team gives the client a horse-related task to carry out. The type and manner is which the activities are completed and the issues that arise as a result will be framed in a metaphorical context and reflecting on the horse’s behavior as it mirrors the client’s actions. The use of horses to mirror human behavior is an intense and highly effective treatment model whether used as an adjunct therapy or primary therapy. Used as a short-term tool EAP is very effective not only to identify the source of trauma but also to increase the accuracy of assessments. The Mental Health Professional will direct customized treatment goals, desired outcomes and follow-up sessions.

What do both EAL and EAP have in common?

EAP and EAL are both about “learning by doing” through experiential activities with horses in a non-riding format. Both models assist participants in connecting with emotions to provide metaphoric experiences to enhance emotional growth and produce “ah-HA!” moments. Horses serve as another tool to create a talking point for future sessions or to facilitate a shift in behavior or attitude. Sessions in both models are designed specifically to meet the needs and desires of the participants in mind. The result is often dramatic.

What is the horse connection?

The EAGALA Model uses horse partners to co-facilitate sessions for specific and unique reasons. Horses are experts in non-verbal communication. They survive and thrive in a complex group dynamic, otherwise known as their “herd”. Each horse has a unique personality and behaviors that can be exhibited in clear and no uncertain terms. Horses are able to mirror human behavior with unbiased feedback in a natural, non-verbal but very direct communication. Horses cannot be manipulated either verbally or physically. Horses by their very nature are strong, powerful and compelling yet they possess grace and gentleness.

Who can benefit from this?

Everyone can!! The possibilities are endless. Anyone will benefit from the gentle yet powerful energies and wisdom of the horse. All it takes is a little curiosity and a desire to try something new.

Mental Health Needs

Many Mental Health concerns may be explored through the EAGALA Model. Depression, PTSD, eating disorders, grief and loss, ADD, ADHD, emotional behavior issues, family dynamics and relationship challenges are just a few of the examples that may benefit from a horse-human interaction.
