The shakuhachi is a traditional Japanese end-blown bamboo flute. It's history is steeped in myth and lore of Samurai warriors turned Bhuddist monks. Its secrets were locked in traditional contemplative societies for centuries until the Emperor brought the instrument into his court, and eventually the general public, in the 19th century. The shakuhachi’s rich, unique tonal quality is unlike that of side-blown bamboo flutes. Though more difficult to play, it is preferred by many because of its haunting tonality and meditative quality.
This Japanese end-blown flute is traditionally made from the root stalk of the bamboo plant, giving the flute a slightly richer, sweeter tone, and an aesthetic quality unmatched by any other flute. Our roots are high quality madake, cured for years before beginning the more difficult process of creating these beautiful instruments.
(Less expensive roots may occasionally be available.)
Tuned to high specifications, in traditional minor pentatonic scales, unless otherwise requested, utilizing digital quartz tuners. Concert quality with close to two, or more, registers of range. Traditional 20' alto D.
