ROLFING® is a system of body education and physical manipulation originally called “structural integration.” Fundamentally, Rolfing consists of some simple ideas about human structure:
- most human beings are significantly out of alignment with gravity;
- we function better when we are lined up with the gravitational field of the earth; and
- the human body is so plastic that its alignment can be brought into harmony with gravity at practically any time of life.
Rolfing releases the body’s segments—legs, torso, arms, etc.—from life-long patterns of tension and bracing and permits gravity to re-align them. By doing so, it balances the body.
Body misalignment in gravity results in chronic strain, lowered vitality and impaired biological and psychological functioning. Because the body is better balanced after Rolfing, it expends less of its vital energies against gravity resulting in a higher level of alertness and vitality, movement becoming easier, and overall functioning tends to improve.
Although the symptoms are not the primary concern of the practitioner, Structural Integration often has long term positive effects with a broad variety of locomotion related conditions, general as well as localized, especially chronic myofascial conditions where conventional approaches often are not the most adequate, and sometimes overly invasive as in surgical procedures. Chronic movement, neuro-muscular, and myofascial, conditions respond particularly well to Structural Integration.
ROLFING REALIGNS THE BODY:
Rolfing systematically organizes the body’s “organ of structure”--the soft, connective tissue network, known as the myofascial system. It supports the skeleton and soft tissues, positions the bones, determines the direction of the muscle pulls and of movement, and gives the body shape.
The human body holds itself erect with pairs of muscle groups functioning within a network of fascial sheaths. These pairs normally function in an antagonist relationship with one another. When one pair contracts, the other pair must extend to maintain proper balance. If that relationship is impaired through injury or chronic tension in one of the groups, the fascia conforms to the shortenings and the rest of the body must compensate to maintain balance.
The job of Rolfing is to free the shortened fascia, allow the muscles to return to a balanced relationship and the body to release the compensations. When the myofascial system is organized, gravity causes it to uplift and align the body’s segments.
THE ROLFING SERIES:
The basic Rolfing series consists of 10 sessions. Each Rolfing session builds upon the results of the previous one, so that the results are cumulative. The first seven sessions remove strain from specific areas of the body: the lower back, neck, knees, etc. The remaining sessions organize and align the body as a whole.
The Rolfer sensitively applies the right amount of pressure where the fascia is restricted. The combination of applied pressure and synchronized movements by the client frees and repositions the connective tissue and permits the body segments to realign.
Sessions last approximately one hour. The amount of time between sessions can vary from one week to one month depending on the individual and the session.
BENEFITS FROM ROLFING:
People of all ages come to Rolfing for help with neck pain, back problems, impaired mobility and other difficulties which originate with internal strains or chronic tension/ aches pains. Often, they turn to Rolfing after more traditional methodologies fail. Others seek to improve their appearance (posture), athletic or performing arts abilities, or general well being. Some pursue a mind/body connection to enhance personal growth toward a fuller realization of their potential or obtain psychological relief as the emotional stress stored in your body is released.
