The Leading Edge of Soul Growth

by Katharina Wehrli MA, CAGS, RPP / Healer, Teacher and Author of The Why in the Road - Soul Healing for Changing Times
Western philosophy and modern religions have embraced an image of the Source as perfect, while human beings are seen as lacking perfection. For some unknown reason Spirit had a desire to create souls and universes. If Spirit were perfect, it would not have needed to create anything. Life is therefore the manifested evidence of the Source's desire for evolution. It equals the process of becoming, a metamorphosis of limitations. The notion of perfection within earthly existence is a myth recently created by cultures that have lost their connection with the natural roots of existence. On the leading edge of soul growth, human nature and cultural conditioning require closer examination. The religious idea that humanity is separate from God or Goddess causes a loss of inner authority. Through realigning the body with the mind, and the emotions with spirit, natural forms of spirituality permit self-empowering instinctual responses. They re-establish trust in the innate wisdom the human organism is endowed with. Any spiritual practice that links the body with the mind through concentration and specific disciplined actions takes advantage of the naturally divine connection within the body/mind continuum. Such practices are yoga, tantra, tai chi, and so on. Purging the artificial gap within the culturally conditioned psyche of modern people is necessary. Without accepting all our emotional and sexual dynamics as equally valid as our thoughts and spiritual ideals, we will not be able to grow past them.

Living with Dementia

by Eva Lewarne, MSW, OCAD / Creativity Coach and Workshop Leader
People with dementia want to be loved by people who care about them and want to be treated like human beings. Maybe one of the reasons people with dementia suffer the way they do is because everyone acts as if their lives are already over. Being blocked out of a conversation or patronized by friends, memory loss and personality changes are everyday realities of living with dementia. Families anguish over their afflicted father and cry, "I'm losing him, and I want my Dad back." Each of us is unique and has a unique way of expressing our anguish. Some of us internalize our anger and frustration and become depressed. Others tend to act it out and try to make people around them feel as they do, i.e. angry and frustrated. The parent's immediate caregivers, the nursing staff, are often the brunt of these families' pain. We as caregivers must just remember that the people we are caring for, as well as their families, are in pain, both emotional and physical. Dealing with the physical is much easier then emotional, which requires copious amounts of patience, true dedication and an almost extra-sensory perception of deciphering the non-verbal cues of the person with dementia.

Your Personal Power: Cultivating and Sustaining It

by Idara E. Bassey, Mc.D. / Attorney, Spiritual Counselor and Author of Reflections of a Mystical Sistah
A solid “inner armor” is an important tool to have in our life arsenal so the challenges we face on a day-to-day basis do not do us in. Becoming self-referencing is one of the most important skills we can ever develop in life and it is a key aspect of developing personal power. It is perfectly fine to have friends, spouses, partners and the like, but at the end of the day we have look within ourselves and become the authority of our own experience. As the saying goes, “we came into this world alone and we will leave alone.” Only we can determine our values and priorities; and this task is too important be delayed or delegated. Each time we take a step away from our conditioned responses and look to ourselves as the source of insight about what matters to us, we have an opportunity to create a new set of results in our lives and increased inner power to boot. We live more and more in our personal power when the truth of our being is reflected in our daily experience. We can then encounter the world from a position of strength that bodes well for creating a satisfying life experience can resist the “winds” of what we encounter everyday.

Attention & Intention Applied To Dance And Life

by Rosane Gibson / Founder of the Enlightenment Dance Company and author of Enlightenment Dance - Dancing your Way to Eternal Bliss
The more attention we give to our dance movements, the more in-tune with our feelings we are, and the more vivid and real our expression. Sometimes dance students get so focused on whether their body is moving right that they lose track of their feelings. This is because Western education is based on copying and comparing. We feel afraid of being judged “wrong” if we don’t follow pre-established patterns. Fearing rejection, we accept copying instead of learning. We forget that we are individuals, and grow up following rules and learning to be who we aren’t. So, we must open up to real creativity. First, remember that we are all different from each other and that our dance will reflect those differences. There’s no right no wrong; there is just the dance. Learning how to apply awareness and intent to your dance helps you do the same in other areas of your life. You will develop awareness of your thoughts and emotions, and learn to place your intent to “feed” only those that promote well-being and happiness. That is why dance is a tool for enlightenment and empowerment.

Learning the Differences Between Herbs

by Susun S. Weed / Herbalist and Voice of the Wise Woman Way
Herbal medicine is the medicine of the people. It is simple, safe, effective, and free. Our ancestors knew how to use an enormous variety of plants for health and well-being. Our neighbors around the world continue to use local plants for healing and health maintenance, and you can too. In this article, you will explore the differences between nourishing, tonifying, stimulating/sedating, and potentially-poisonous plants. You will learn how to prepare and use them for greatest effect and most safety. All herbs are not equal: some contain poisons, some don't; some of the poisons are not so bad, some can kill you dead. I divide herbs into four categories for ease in remembering how (and how much) to use. Some herbs nourish us, some tonify, some bring us up or ease us down, and some are frighteningly strong. Nourishing herbs are the safest of all herbs. They contain few or no alkaloids, glycosides, resins, or essential oils (poisons). Nourishing herbs are eaten as foods, cooked into soups, dried and infused, or, occasionally, made into vinegars. They provide high-level nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, proteins, phytoestrogens and phytosterols, starches, simple and complex sugars, bioflavonoids, carotenes, and essential fatty acids (EFAs). Nourishing herbs in water bases (infusions, soups, vinegars) may generally be taken in any quantity for any period of time. Side-effects - even from excessive use - are quite rare. Nourishing herbs are rarely used as tinctures (in alcohol), but when they are, their effects may be quite different.
