The Three Traditions Of Healing

There are many ways to use herbs to improve and maintain health. Modern medicine uses highly refined herbal products known as drugs. Many alternative or holistic practitioners recommend herbs, usually in less-refined (and less dangerous) forms such as tinctures or homeopathic remedies. And then there are the yarb women, the wise women, such as myself, who integrate herbs into their daily diet and claim far-reaching results for simple remedies. I call these three different approaches the Scientific, Heroic, and Wise Woman traditions. These three traditions are ways of thinking, not ways of acting. And they are not limited to herbs. Any technique, any substance can be used by a healer in the Scientific, Heroic, and Wise Woman traditions. There are, for instance, naturopaths, midwives, and MDs in each tradition, as well as herbalists, educators, therapists, even politicians. Each of these traditions lives within you, too. As I define the characteristics of each tradition, identify the part of yourself that thinks that way.

The ego wants you to do what it wants you to do, so it will do anything it can do to keep you in control. The way the ego controls people is to use guilt. People, cultures and societies over the centuries have used guilt, shame and blame to control their children. When you "feel guilty," you think that you have done something wrong and are judging yourself. The result is your energy becomes totally tied up in knots and pulls you in different directions at the same time, with no resolution possible. So how do you get rid of guilt? Become conscious of your judgments of yourself and stop accepting judgments from yourself or others. Start attending to your own needs and honor them, rather than making them wrong. Feel your real feelings and you will come to know what is best for you rather than what you have been conditioned to think you should do. You will find that you have been conditioned to think badly of yourself for many, many healthy things. The only way to resolve guilt is to stop making you or others wrong. It is simple. Cease the judgments that you or anyone else is wrong and then you will be able to relax and love again.

Aromatherapy: The Basics

Essential oils are complex mixtures of naturally occurring compounds that exist in some plants which have fragrant flowers, leaves, wood, bark, roots, or seeds. From an organic chemist's point of view, the active constituents of essential oils are composed of hydrocarbons and oxygenated hydrocarbons which can be grouped according to their molecular structure into terpenes, esters, alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, and phenols.
Essential oils may be extracted from plants using a variety of methods but for aromatherapy purposes, the only acceptable methods are those that are non-toxic. This includes distillation, cold pressing, and, in a few cases, non-toxic solvent extraction. A good therapeutic grade essential oil is produced using non-toxic procedures that preserve the life-giving vital essence of the plant. Essential oils vary greatly in quality and not all are therapeutic grade.

Menopause is a woman's time of wisdom, power and knowledge. Cultural background, diet, lifestyle, genetics and knowledge of the menopausal process play key roles in how a woman will experience menopause. This year over 60 million women in the United States will reach menopause. The average age for a woman to cease having her menstrual cycle and stop reproduction is 51.3 years of age, however, peri-menopause can begin in the late thirties. An individualized process, no woman experiences menopause in exactly the same way. Menopause symptoms can range from none to many and last for varying lengths of time up to a period of five-years. Women who choose not to use traditional hormone replacement therapy (HRT) may choose to use natural methods to help alleviate menopausal symptoms. The mind and body methods described in this article treat the whole person to make menopause a more positive experience.
