 The Many Benefits of Fiber

Fiber is defined as “the indigestible part of fruits, seeds, vegetables, whole grains and other edible plants.” Ideally, we need 35-45 grams of fiber per day. Amazingly, the average American consumes only 10-12! Fiber helps reduce the risk of heart attack, diabetes and cancer. It also helps maintain healthy cholesterol and blood sugar levels, promotes bowel regularity, and boosts the immune system. Fiber eliminates calories we have already eaten, reduces the absorption of calories, and slows our body’s conversion of carbohydrates to sugar, thus supporting blood glucose stability to support weight loss. This is called a “fiber flush.” Each gram consumed flushes out 7 calories. Fiber is also a natural appetite suppressant. It takes up a large amount of space in the stomach and causes the small intestine to release a hormone called CCK (cholecystokinin). This hormone sends an important message to the brain: “Okay, I’m full now. Time to stop eating!”
