BioSomatics is an original “body awareness” exercise program emphasizing tension release, flexibility, postural alignment, and internal strengthening for weight support. The deep stretch and strengthening exercises fortify the body against strain and injury and help to alleviate muscular aches and pains. The core belief of the technique is that these ailments as well as many health-related problems result from accumulated tensions and poor postural habits, and that correcting these conditions is essential to lifetime bodily comfort, optimum health, and superior physical performance.
Former principal dancer of the National Ballet of Canada (1951-1963). Studied the Martha Graham modern dance technique. Created BioSomatics in 1980 after a 13-year period of exploration into problems of limited movement within her own body and personally discovering the benefits of corrective bodywork exercise.
BioSomatics is based on the true meaning of the word fitness, which is "prepared, or suitable, for use." Fit-ness is achieved by ensuring that the mechanical and structural needs of the body are met. These needs are: release of tension, flexibility of muscles and joints, postural alignment, and weight support. When these needs are satisfied, the body is then fit for all activites as well as for comfortable and enjoyable daily living.
