Blue Ridge School of Massage and Yoga, in Blacksburg, Virginia, offers a comprehensive Medical Massage-based curriculum: Swedish, Deep Tissue, Trigger Point and Myofascial Release, Shiatsu and Thai Yoga Massage as major bodywork modalities, with Reiki, Polarity, Reflexology and Pregnancy Massage in-depth introductions. Yoga and Chi Kung are integrated into classes to promote wellness and safe massage practice, focus, and kinesthetic body awareness. Students are well-grounded in Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology, Communication, Ethics, and Business Practices by their graduation.
Jeff Tiebout, CMT, founded the school. A graduate of the Florida School of Massage, he has had an active private practice for twenty-four years, and has been an inspiring and much loved teacher of massage and yoga for nineteen years. Jeff has a reverence and keen interest in the human organism, which he brings to the instruction of Physiology and Pathology. His unique and ever-evolving form of shiatsu practiced on the table, is grounded and practical. He is a certified Ashtanga yoga instructor who "walks his talk" embodying yogic practices and principles. He, along with Victoria, have made life committments to teach and to heal. Together they have created Combined Deep Therapy, a portion of the program which combines Neuromuscular Trigger Point & Travell Trigger Point Therapies with Counterstrain practices, a uniquely broad and highly therapeutic set of related techniques.
Information on classes, open house dates, and tuition plans is available by email or on our web site.
After completing our state-approved 550-hour massage therapy program, graduates are eligible to take the National Certification Exam in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Blue Ridge School helps students prepare for the exam by including “The Complete Review Guide for the National Certification Exam” as one of our texts. After passing the exam, graduates may apply to the Nursing Board of Virginia for the Certified Massage Therapist credential. This certification permits graduates to legally practice massage therapy in Virginia. Every two years, certified massage therapists must complete 25 hours of continuing education requirements to maintain their certification.
Yoga is integrated into the massage therapy program, in the practice of asana (physical postures) at the beginning of classes for the purpose of self-care for bodywork, cultivating the focus, centering and grounding that are hallmarks of conscious bodywork, and to educate students in stretches to give their massage clients for self-care. The ethical foundations of yoga and the ethics required of massage therapists are very similar and complementary.
