Profile and Credentials

Jill & William Rand draw on over 20 years of professional training and personal experience, including Buddhist Teacher Training with Dr. Matthew Flickstein, Yoga Teacher Training with Amrit Desai, Tai Chi; Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction with Jon Kabat-Zinn; Gurdjieff Group Work; and study with Gangaji, Adyashanti and other nondual teachers. Their primary teacher for 18 years was Ron Mangravite, an enlightened sage from NYC.

They retired from professional careers in Business Information Systems to open Briar Rose Center and begin teaching full time in 1998. Both William & Jill are ordained ministers, Reiki Masters, life & spiritual coaches. They co-teach semi-annual transformative retreats. Weekly classes include: Group Meditations, Seth (Explore your Beliefs); World Awareness Study Group; Stress Management).

Philosophy and Comments

Briar Rose Center, a community for self-inquiry, healing and growth, is dedicated to helping people wake from their trancelike state of auto-pilot reactivity and maximize their potential on all levels. The basic foundation for all work is the ancient practice of Mindfulness, or being HERE, NOW, moment to moment, with a non-judgmental awareness of what is happening to you and within you. Once only taught in monasteries, mindfulness (bare attention, vipassana) has been extensively researched during the last two decades and is being used worldwide as a vehicle for change, healing, pain management, and stress reduction. We function as educators in bringing this practice to the public through our Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction classes, ongoing meditation groups, individual instruction and public lectures and workshops. Mindfulness brings more peace into the world, one life at at time. "It is not that mindfulness is the "answer" to all life's problems. Powerful stress chemicals gave our ancestors the speed to run from a tiger. This reaction is excessive today, yet, the fight-or-flight signal is firing almost constantly. The level of anxiety in our culture has sent our nervous systems in to a tailspin. This is the most common cause of ill health in our society.

In the face of perceived danger (traffic jam, meeting with the boss, worries about the future, TV News), we contract our muscles, hold our breath, and generate feelings of anger and fear. Usually there is no real immediate danger so the chemicals don't get used up. They remain in our systems, damaging our bodies and creating feelings of anxiety in our minds.
