Blue Scullcap Herbal Medicines for Anxiety and Insomnia

Description

EasyMind, a natural anti-anxiety medication and Night-Cap SR, a natural sleep aid, are formulations of our patented Blue Scullcap Standardized Extract (aka skullcap). They are products of Phytos' research in anxiety and insomnia and our commitment to develop new herbal anti-anxiety medications and sedatives.

Phytos Inc. is an herbal products research and development company — an "herb-tech" — creating new and unique herbal medicines and food additives.

As a result of extensive research and development process, Phytos is now presenting EASYMIND, a powerful relaxant, that has little if any impact on performance and cognitive abilities, but a demonstrable effect on tension. Using EASYMIND results in a relaxation response and an ability to de-stress and cope better with problems that may be otherwise experienced as difficult and overwhelming. EASYMIND is also beneficial as a sleep induction aid, and many of the people who have experienced our product report more restful sleep. EASYMIND has been used as well with success for smoothing out the stress, dysphoria and headaches of pre-menstrual tension.

Phytos' EASYMIND Standardized Extract of Blue Scullcap provides a clearly perceived tension relieving effect when taken in appropriate dosage. As an herbal product, Phytos' EASYMIND is unique in its potency, and in its benefits in treating tension related to stress, the menstrual cycle and difficulties with sleep. For most people a single capsule is an effective dosage, but some persons will require two capsules. In general, onset occurs at 20-30 minutes, depending on stomach contents. The relaxation effect usually lasts 3-4 hours, with peak effect occurring at 1-2 hours. To this point in time, no side effects have been reported. The effect of combining EASYMIND with other substances is unknown.

Our NIGHT-CAP SR product used at the recommended dosage of one or two 550mg capsules is designed to be released over a six-hour period to provide a rapid and smooth onset of sleep and its maintenance, with effect persisting for up to eight hours duration. The immediate release portion of this formulation provides an onset and duration of effect similar to EASYMIND, while the Sustained Release portion enables maintenance of sleep over the night.

Philosophy and Comments

Anxiety is an omnipresent fact of life in our society. It is the leading psychiatric symptom. There are more official and unofficial forms of treatment for anxiety than for any other human ailment. The spectrum of problems and disorders related to anxiety are myriad, and include insomnia, somatic manifestations, phobias, obsessions and compulsions, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, substance abuse disorders including smoking, symptoms relating to the menstrual cycle, work stress-the list is endless. According to NIMH data, approximately 13.3% of the US population, or 24 million people suffer from overt anxiety disorders. Additional millions of individuals and families experience anxiety as a less severe but difficult problem in their lives.

North American traditional medicine has used Blue Scullcap, as a relaxant, a tonic, or nervine, which in contemporary psychiatric language is referred to as an anxiolytic/sedative.

In the UK, Blue Scullcap became a mainstay of British clinical phytotherapy, with focus on its anxiolytic properties and ability to ameliorate the anxiety symptoms of PMS. The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia describes it as having anti-convulsive and sedative actions, and indicates its use in nervous tension states and epilepsy. This also reflects its usage by US Eclectic physicians in the early 20th. Century.

It is important to differentiate use of Blue Scullcap in western herbal medicine from the use of Chinese Scullcap, S. baicalensis, in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

In order to validate claims made for Blue Scullcap, Phytos conducted the first ever investigation-a placebo controlled double blind study-of the therapeutic efficacy of Blue Scullcap. A substantial statistically significant reduction in anxiety was found. The study was published in the March/April 2003 issue of the prestigious journal Alternative Therapies.

EASYMIND and NIGHT-CAP SR are the products of an intensive exploration of the phytopharmaceutical properties of Blue Scullcap--Scutellaria lateriflora--undertaken by Phytos over the past five years. Two of our prominent herbalists, David Hoffmann and David Winston, had extensive prior experience with the plant, primarily as a tincture, using it in their practices as a nervine, treating PMS related anxiety, and anxiety disorders in general, and often using Scullcap in combination with other herbs.
