Center for Mind-Body Medicine

Description

The Center for Mind-Body Medicine is a non-profit educational organization. Our mission is to train healthcare professionals to combine the precision of modern science with the principles of self care, which include mind-body techniques for stress management and nutritional medicine to help people heal themselves, their clients, families and communities.

Profile and Credentials

James S. Gordon, MD, is the Founder and Director of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, DC and is a Clinical Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Family Medicine at the Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Gordon recently served as Chairman of the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy. He also served as the first Chair of the Program Advisory Council of the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Alternative Medicine and is a former member of the Cancer Advisory Panel on Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the NIH.

Philosophy and Comments

The Center for Mind-Body Medicine is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to reviving the spirit and transforming the practice of medicine. The Center is working to create a more effective, comprehensive and compassionate model of healthcare and education. The Center’s model combines the precision of modern science with the best of the world’s healing traditions. This model is based on self-awareness and relies on “self-care” as its core. The Center believes that all of us have a great and largely untapped capacity to improve our own health and well-being through mind-body approaches, nutrition, exercise and group support. The Center has worked with the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, and the World Health Organization, as well as many medical schools, to educate healthcare professionals and the public in the US and around the world.

The Center is at the forefront of a movement, which seeks to bring this empowering approach into the heart of American medical practice and to make it the core of the education of all health care providers. The Center is particularly committed to the development of new models of care; to the education of medical students and those who teach them; and to service to the disadvantaged, and to the inclusion of volunteers in all aspects of our work.

Over the last 30 years an ever-increasing number of Americans have experienced the limitations and adverse side effects of conventional medical care. They are now searching for care that integrates the most effective alternative and complementary therapies from the world’s leading healing traditions. A survey published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 1997 indicated that 42% of all Americans were using such therapies as herbal supplements, acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, and group support as an integral part of their health care.

The Center is actively involved in demonstrating the cost-effectiveness and universal appropriateness of mind-body medicine and to making it a shaping force in the current debate on health care reform. The Center's services are available to all regardless of ability to pay.

The Mission of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine is to combine the precision of modern science and the wisdom of great healing traditions. The Center for Mind-Body Medicine provides a model, which offers health professionals and people everywhere, the experience, the perspective, and the tools they need to heal themselves, their communities, and the world. The Center has set the standard for excellence in Mind-Body healing and has created a system of professional education and training based upon the best practices that each healing system has to offer.

The work of the Center is supported by individual donations and foundation grants, as well as by its fee-for service programs. The Center is a 501(c)(3) organization, and contributions are tax-deductible to the full extent allowed by law. Please contact the Center for more information.
